This Monday, we honor all the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country. Memorial Day goes back to Civil War times, when it was known as Decoration Day. However, it didn’t become an official holiday until 1971. Come show your respect for our service members at the 2018 Westfield Memorial Day parade and service this year.

2018 Westfield Memorial Day Parade & Service
The day’s events start out at the Veteran’s Memorial Monument promptly at 9 am. Here, Chaplain Bob D’Arecca opens the ceremony with a prayer and benediction. Local singer Kerry Stubbs sings “God Bless America”. Also, the Westfield High School Chorale Group performs their moving rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner”. Former Westfield American Legion Commander Allan Betau offers up his remarks about the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. Mayor Shelley Brindle will also speak a few words.
After the opening ceremonies of the 2018 Westfield Memorial Day parade and service are finished, Grand Marshal Teddy Grossi leads the parade up East Broad Street along with several veterans. Members of our local police force, firefighters, the Westfield Neighborhood Council, and government officials join the parade as well. The Westfield High School marching band plays patrotic music along the parade route.
The 2018 Westfield Memorial Day parade ends at Fairview Cemetery, where three local vets and their families will be singled out and honored for their heroism. Afterwards, the public is welcome to a barbecue at the American Legion post located at Crossway and North.
Do you personally know any veterans you would like to honor this Memorial Day weekend? Leave their names in the comments below as well as their branch of service. They deserve to be recognized for their bravery.
