Westfield Area Cities Make Top 20 Best Places to Live in NJ List

March 18, 2022 by Scott Gleason

What do Short Hills, Westfield, Summit, and Chatham Township all have in common? Great schools. Great homes. Awesome people. Oh, and they all made Niche.com’s 2022 Top 20 Best Places to Live in New Jersey List. How did Niche.com determine their rankings and what made these Westfield area cities so special? I’m glad you asked.

No surprise here. Four Westfield area cities landed among the top 20 of Niche.com's Best Places to Live in New Jersey list for 2022.

Westfield Area Cities Named Among Top 20 Best Places to Live in NJ

How Niche.com Determined Rankings

Click here for an instant "No Strings Attached" valuation of your home.Niche.com gathers data from various sources, such as the US Census, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the Tax Foundation, the FBI Uniform Crime Report, local surveys, and more. Then, they sort this information into 15 separate categories. Cost of living and higher education rate receive the most weight (12.5% each) while the shortest commute makes up 2% of each city’s overall grade.

Short Hills (#12) came in tops among the four cities in the Westfield area on this list. It also landed on top of the Best Places to Live in Essex County list. Westfield itself followed closely behind at #13. Niche.com ranked it #1 of the Best Places to Live in Union County. Summit hit the #18 spot in the entire state but #2 in Union County. Chatham Township closed out the state’s rankings at #20 and landed in the #2 spot for Morris County, following right behind Mountain Lakes. All four cities received an overall “A+” rating from Niche.com’s panel. Short HIlls also filled the top spot for Best Public Schools in New Jersey. Westfield’s public schools, nightlife, jobs, recreation, and family-friendly atmosphere received “A” grades all around.

Westfield is no stranger to Niche.com’s “Best” lists. They have consistently ranked in the top 20 “Best of New Jersey” lists for several years, including the Best Suburbs to Live in New Jersey in 2020 and the Best Places to Live in New Jersey in 2019. In fact, this year’s placement of #13 on the state’s overall list is an improvement on the #15 spot they ranked in 2021.

Our Westfield area market is seeing a lot of buyer interest right now. So, if you wish to put your home on the market anytime soon, please contact me right away.

Westfield Area Blood Drives in March 2022

March 11, 2022 by Scott Gleason

COVID-19. An aging population. Fewer donors. Fewer donation sites. All of these things contributed to our current nationwide blood shortage. But you can help change things. Over the next couple of weeks, make an appointment to donate blood at one of two Westfield area blood drives.

In March 2022, two different Westfield area blood drives are going on: one in Westfield and the other in Cranford. You could be a literal life-saver by signing up to donate at either one today.

Westfield Area Blood Drives – March 2022

Westfield Blood Drive

Click here for an instant "No Strings Attached" valuation of your home. The Westfield blood drive takes place from 2 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, March 16th at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Gallows Hill Rd. You may schedule a donation time by visiting the New York Blood Center’s website here. As of the writing of this post, several appointment times remain available.

Cranford Blood Drive

The Cranford Blood Drive takes place from 1 pm to 7 pm on Sunday, March 20th at the Cranford VFW on South Ave East. While walk-ins are welcome, you are strongly encouraged to reserve an appointment time. This helps to keep social distancing in effect. To schedule your donation time, please visit the New York Blood Center’s website here.

Facts About Blood Donations

The American Red Cross reports that someone in the United States needs either blood platelets or plasma every two seconds. Type O-negative remains the most sought-after blood type due to its ability to thrive with any other blood type. Type AB plasma also works with all blood types. Both of these are in extremely short supply. However, donors of all types are welcome. After receipt of a donation, it gets processed and tested. Once broken down into its various components (platelets, plasma, and red blood cells), it gets labeled and stored for use where needed. Finally, it gets transported to hospitals that need it.

Please help save the lives of others. Sign up for one of the Westfield area blood drives today. Thank you.

Homeowners Insurance Check-Up: Are You Prepared for a Natural Disaster?

September 9, 2021 by Scott Gleason

Back in 2012, Superstorm Sandy hit our neighborhood. Just last week, Hurricane Ida struck. (Reminder: Regular curbside pickup will not allow for bulky storm waste and debris. You must dispose of it at the Conservation Center.) When a natural disaster strikes, many homeowners rely on their insurance to take care of damages to their property. But when was the last time you checked on your homeowners insurance? You need to do that sooner rather than later.

After Hurricane Ida, it is time to perform a homeowners insurance check-up. Are you prepared for the next natural disaster?

Homeowners Insurance Check-Up

Search Westfield luxury homes for saleTornados. Floods. Hurricanes. Severe cold weather. They may all affect our lives here in the Westfield area at one point or another. If that happens, you want to be prepared.

Floods

Yes, homeowners insurance typically covers damage from a plumbing issue on your property. However, most of these policies do not cover flooding from a natural disaster. According to CoreLogic, flooding represents the #1 natural disaster in the country. And more than 20% of the claims come from homes located in non-flood zones. You must purchase a separate flood insurance policy to cover your Westfield area home in case of a natural disaster.

Tornadoes/Hurricanes

A typical homeowners insurance policy covers most wind damage resulting from a tornado or hurricane. However, it might require a higher deductible. Plus, you might want to increase your payout to cover total damage and loss of property, including how much it would cost to replace your home at its current value. On the other hand, it does not cover water damage. For that, you need a whole separate flood insurance policy.

Cold Weather

Another issue we deal with here in the Westfield area is cold winter weather. Your regular homeowners insurance policy should cover damage from a frozen pipe as long as you maintain a proper temperature on your property. Damage on properties unoccupied for an extended period of time (such as a second home or during a long vacation) will not be covered under a standard policy. If a tree or branch falls on your roof, any removal and repairs should be covered by your regular policy as well. The same goes for damage from hail.

Wildfires

Finally, while more prevalent in the West, wildfires can occur anywhere. Fortunately, this should be included as a “covered peril” in your homeowners policy. But check with your agent to make sure.

Schedule an appointment with your insurance agent as soon as possible. Go over everything included in your policy. Make sure your deductibles fall where you want them to. Also, double-check that your payout covers a total loss of personal property as well as your home. Most likely, it costs more to replace your home now than when you first purchased your insurance policy. But you want it to be up to date. If it isn’t, increase it to the current replacement value. The last thing you need to worry about when you lose everything is whether or not you have sufficient insurance.

Westfield Food Waste Recycling Program is Back

May 7, 2021 by Scott Gleason

Things are starting to (somewhat) return to normal again. Kids went back to school. Businesses and restaurants opened back up, albeit with some restrictions in place. Last week, Quimby Street activities started up again. Now, the Westfield Food Waste Recycling Program is back.

The Westfield Food Waste Recycling Program is back in business. Drop your food waste off for free at the Westfield Conservation Center during normal business waste. In turn, this food waste gets turned into bio-fuel.

Westfield Food Waste Recycling Program

Click here for an instant "No Strings Attached" valuation of your home. The City partnered up with Green Bucket Compost to create a food waste recycling program here in Westfield back in 2019. Unfortunately, they suspended the program last year during the global pandemic. With so many people cooking for themselves over the past 12+ months, household food waste went up. Westfield residents began asking to bring back the recycling program. The City listened. And now it is back. So, instead of dumping it down your garbage disposal or put out to the curbside, it gets recycled into cleaner-burning bio-fuel to use in place of the more toxic petroleum-based fuel.

All you need to do to participate is to throw your household food waste into a reusable bin/bucket. Then, take it to the recycling center (1300 Lamberts Mill Rd) between 9 am and 2:30 pm on Thursdays and Fridays or 9 am to 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. No permit required. Empty your containers of food waste into the covered bins provided. If those bins are full, you may leave your waste in your own container next to the bins. However, your containers cannot be made of glass or black plastic bags. Green Bucket picks the waste up and takes it to the Elizabeth NJ’s Waste Management facilities. After initial processing, the waste then makes its way to the Rahway Valley Sewage Authority. Once there, it gets turned into bio-fuel.

Acceptable Food Waste

  • Coffee Grounds
  • Dairy
  • Egg Shells
  • Fruits
  • Grains
  • Meat
  • Oils and Fats (limited amounts)
  • Potato Peels
  • Seafood (no shells)
  • Vegetables

Westfield Makes Top 10 List of Best Suburbs to Live in NJ

February 19, 2021 by Scott Gleason

Niche.com collects data on various cities all over the country. They compile this data in different “best of” lists. In 2020, they put Westfield in the top 10 of their Best Suburbs to Live in New Jersey list. (It is a little too early in the year to be releasing their 2021 list.) That actually moved us up a spot from our 2019 rankings. But that really does not surprise anyone who lives here.

Niche.com put Westfield in the #6 spot of its 2020 Top 10 Best Suburbs to Live in New Jersey, moving it up one spot from 2019.

Westfield Ranked in Top 10 Best Suburbs to Live in NJ

How Niche.com Determines Rankings

Click here for an instant "No Strings Attached" valuation of your home. The folks at Niche.com base each city’s ranking on 15 separate categories. These include the cost of living, education, housing, public schools, and diversity among other things. They pull data from a variety of sources, including the US Census Bureau, FBI, US Department of Education, and local surveys. Each category equals a percentage of the overall score.

Why Westfield Made the Grade

While our cost of living may be higher than some other cities in New Jersey, we excel in just about every other category Niche.com judged us in. Our excellent public school system, community health and access to healthcare, and our family-friendly community set us in the “A+” category. Meanwhile, our abundance of outdoor activities, our economic growth, high employment rate, and an array of restaurants, bars, and entertainment options achieved “A” status as well. Our low crime rate, diverse population, and short commute times were all given a “B” grade.

With a population of just under 30,000, Westfield residents enjoy the close-knit community that a small town provides. Fortunately, its location allows an easy commute to NYC and everything that the city has to offer (both for work and play). Niche.com also ranked it #9 out of 637 other cities on its 2020 Best Places to Live in New Jersey list. And it made the #14 spot on its 2020 Best Suburbs to Raise a Family in New Jersey list.
