My Westfield neighbors make me so proud to live here. We believe in giving back to the community. Even in a country as great as ours, over half a million men, women, and children are homeless on any given day of the year. Almost 9,000 of them live in New Jersey alone. With temperatures hitting the near-freezing mark overnight right now, that makes life even more difficult for these individuals. Presbyterian Church Westfield asks for donations to help them put together toiletry kits for the homeless on the upcoming Westfield MLK Day of Service.
Westfield MLK Day of Service
Dr. Martin Luther King believed in serving the community. He challenged us all to think about what we could do for others. After all, helping other people in your community also helps you. So, by doing something for those less fortunate, you reap the rewards as well. In that vein, Martin Luther King Day has morphed into a day of service to honor his memory.
On our Westfield MLK Day of Service (January 20th), volunteers congregate at the Presbyterian Church on Mountain to put together toiletry kits. In turn, they plan on delivering these to Bridges Outreach in Summit. Then, the kits get distributed to the homeless living in nearby Summit, NYC, Irvington, and Newark.
Items Needed for Toiletry Kits
All of the volunteer spots available for this Day of Service event have already been filled. However, you can still help out. Simply drop off any of the following items at the church before January 17th.
- Ziploc bags (quart size)
- Toothbrush, toothpaste & dental floss
- Razors and shaving cream
- Body lotion
Want to get your children, neighbors, church group or other organization involved? Create your own bags and bring them to the church between 10 am and 11 am on January 20th. They’ll be added to the bags that volunteers put together for our Westfield MLK Day of Service event and delivered to Bridges Outreach for distribution to our neighbors in need. Thank you for your generosity.
